This week the PEN American Center announced the winners its 2013 PEN Literary Awards. For more than 50 years, these awards have honored many of the most outstanding voices in literature across such diverse fields as fiction, poetry, science writing, essays, sports writing, biography, children’s literature, translation, and drama. With the help of its partners and supporters, PEN will confer 16 distinct awards, fellowships, grants, and prizes in 2013, awarding nearly $150,000 to writers, editors, and translators.
Here is the recipient of the Translation Prize ($3,000) and the runner-up, both books translated into English and published in 2012:
- The Island of Second Sight by Albert Vigoleis Thelen (Germany) ― Translated from German by Donald O. White
- The Cardboard House by Martín Adán (Peru) ― Translated from Spanish by Katherine Silver
