2013 Man Booker's Long List Announced

After going through the staggering amount of 151 books submitted for consideration, this year's judges for the Man Booker Prize have released the long list with the 13 finalists, including an Irish book that was rejected 47 times until it was finally published.

Despite the lack of translated works, since all of them were originally written in English, the diversity is clear. Two of the selected authors were born in a non-English speaking country and today write in English about their homeland (Tash Aw was born to Malaysian parents in China and moved to England as a teenager, while Noviolet Bulawayo was born in Zimbabwe and completed her college education in the U.S.), and two others bring their cultural heritage to their writing (Ruth Ozeki was born in the U.S. to a Japanese mother and Jhumpa Lahiri was born in England to Indian parents.)

Additionally, earlier this year the Man Booker International Prize honored Lydia Davis, author and also French-to-English translator.
