Minae Mizumura: "Language is what defines a writer"

Minae Mizumura

Great interview* with Japanese writer Minae Mizumura, in which she talks about literary tradition and translation in Japan.

She recently attended the 3rd Buenos Aires International Literature Festival to talk about her 2002 two-volume book Honkaku Shosetsu ("A Real Novel"), an adaptation of Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" that has postwar Japan as the backdrop.

Her book received the Yomiuri Literature Award in 2003 and is available in Spanish as Una novela real through publisher Adriana Hidalgo. An excerpt in English is also available at the author's website.
